Ontogenetic shifts in home range size of a top predatory reef-associated fish (Caranx ignobilis): implications for conservation

چکیده

Defining the home range of vulnerable species is critical for designing effective spatial management strategies. However, animal ranges often change with ontogeny, and quantifying associated temporal changes particularly challenging mobile marine species. Here, we investigated how space use a top predatory reef-associated fish (giant trevally Caranx ignobilis ) scales body size. Fish were tagged acoustic transmitters passively tracked >3 yr at tropical island atoll in Republic Seychelles. A sheltered environment was juvenile (<60 cm fork length, FL) that exhibited shift location area as they matured into adults. Small (60-100 large (>100 adult appeared to favour shallow coral reefs reef drop offs whilst sharing similar core location. Large utilized greater diversity habitat types had significantly (p < 0.05) annual dispersal distances (mean = 35.29 km, max 91.32 km) than small adults 13.72 21.55 km). Additionally, 209.74 km 2 larger juveniles 38.73 (77.32 there significant 0.02) relationship between length Furthermore, took up 34 mo 18.54 mo) utilize full extent their range. The expansion size throughout ontogeny should be taken account when plans C. .

The Ecology of Coral Reef Top Predators in the PapahānaumokuākeaMarine National Monument

Coral reef habitats in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) are characterized by abundant top-level predators such as sharks and jacks. The predator assemblage is dominated both numerically and in biomass by giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis) and Galapagos sharks (Carcharhinus galapagensis). A lower diversity of predatory teleosts, particularly groupers and snappers, distinguish...

Ocean Acidification Affects Prey Detection by a Predatory Reef Fish

Changes in olfactory-mediated behaviour caused by elevated CO(2) levels in the ocean could affect recruitment to reef fish populations because larval fish become more vulnerable to predation. However, it is currently unclear how elevated CO(2) will impact the other key part of the predator-prey interaction--the predators. We investigated the effects of elevated CO(2) and reduced pH on olfactory...

Use of a marine reserve in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii by the giant trevally, Caranx ignobilis

Movement patterns, site fidelity and growth were studied for giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis) inhabiting a marine reserve surrounding Coconut Island in Kaneohe Bay, off the Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Short-term movements of fish were determined by acoustic telemetry and long-term movements and growth were investigated with conventional tag and release methods. Giant trevally appear to move to the...

Evaluating distributional shifts in home range estimates

A variety of methods are commonly used to quantify animal home ranges using location data acquired with telemetry. High-volume location data from global positioning system (GPS) technology provide researchers the opportunity to identify various intensities of use within home ranges, typically quantified through utilization distributions (UDs). However, the wide range of variability evident with...

Ontogenetic niche shifts and evolutionary branching in size-structured populations

There are many examples of size-structured populations where individuals sequentially exploit several niches in the course of their life history. Efficient exploitation of such ontogenetic niches generally requires specific morphological adaptations. Here, we study the evolutionary implications of the combination of an ontogenetic niche shift and environmental feedback. We present a mechanistic...
